Course Aims

The overall aim of the 120 hour Certificate in TEFL/TESOL Plus is to provide a sound introduction to TEFL/TESOL and prepare you for teaching in the real world.

The 120 Hour TEFL/TESOL Plus course contains units on teaching English to young learners and teaching English online. This additional knowledge will not only be invaluable to you when you begin teaching, it also means you’ll be able to demonstrate specific skills that are in high demand by TEFL/TESOL employers. We’ll make sure you stand out from the crowd!

The 120 Hour TEFL/TESOL Plus course is externally accredited, meaning the content and teaching methods have been scrutinised externally to meet and exceed industry standards. This means you can be sure you’ll participate in a fruitful learning experience.

Your tutor will be an experienced teacher trainer holding a Masters in TEFL/TESOL as a minimum qualification. They will offer you all the support and feedback you need to achieve your full potential.

Eligibility

No prior qualifications or experience are required. Fluent English, determination and willingness to learn are all you need.

Course Structure

Unit 1: Study Skills (not assessed)

How best to organise your study time

Unit 2: The Study of English

Module 1 – Inductive and Deductive Analysis and use of grammars – parts of speech and grammatical terminology – the tense system, reported speech, active and passive
Module 2 – Elements of pronunciation: intonation including rising and falling tones, sentence stress, weak forms – sounds of the language/phonology; word stress, schwa sound, phonemic chart – teaching a ‘pronunciation point’
Module 3 – Lexis selection: frequency and appropriacy – lexis formation: synonyms and antonyms, word stems, parts of speech including prefixes and suffixes

Unit 3: The Teaching and Learning of EFL/ESOL

Module 1 – Overview of EFL/ESOL issues – being a caring teacher, involving students, using realistic language, keeping the students interested, teacher talking time, correction, levels in EFL/ESOL teaching, visual aids, use of mother tongue; teaching for exams: Professional English Examinations; the role of grammar, classroom techniques, one to one teaching
Module 2 – Becoming familiar with the four primary language skills, identifying a range of skills needed for successful listening and reading, understanding some of the problems students experience when speaking and writing, knowing ways of training learners to develop the four skills, planning a receptive and productive skills lesson.

Module 3 – Errors – Recognising and, understanding why students make errors, preparing useful remedial exercises.

Module 4 – Understanding the overall aim of TTEFL/ESOL, facilitating communication, classroom management techniques which encourage students to listen, speak and learn, understanding the importance of 'need first' teaching, recognising a variety of aids and being able to prepare your own aids.

Module 5 – knowing the importance of dividing an EFL/ESOL lesson into separate stages, understanding the role of the teacher at each stage, understanding the importance of adequate planning, writing a detailed lesson plan, bringing about and recognising student progress.

Unit 4: Teaching Online

Module 1 – Working for an online school, finding a good online school, building a strong client base, approaching a diagnostic lesson, choosing a suitable working platform, marketing yourself, creating your own website, planning your online TEFL/TESOL business

Module 2 – Understanding why it is important to design a long-term plan for your online course, practise planning a course, have the links to some useful sources of materials for your course, creating your own materials and the kind of materials you can create

Unit 5: Teaching Young Learners

Module 1 – Understanding how young learners are different from older learners and how it may affect your actions in the classroom or online, motivating your young students, managing a class of young learners including how to deal with discipline problems, group students and give instructions

Module 2 – Understanding what kinds of activities are suitable for a young learners class, know the difference between settlers and stirrers, know how to plan a lesson for young learners

Duration of the Course

The length of time it takes to complete the TEFL/TESOL course depends on your other commitments. There are approximately 120 hours of work in the course. As a general guideline most students complete the course in approximately 8 weeks, but you have 6 weeks to complete the course.

Award of Certificate

On successful completion of the Certificate in TEFL/TESOL Plus, you will be awarded a graded certificate with issue number and a course transcript listing the contents of the course. These will be issued direct from the ALAP Exams Office in the UK, and employers and potential employers can verify your certification on the ALAP website.

Certificates are graded as follows:

• A1 – Distinction
• A2 – Excellent
• B1 – Very Good
• B2 – Good
• C – Pass
