Teaching Practice with INTESOL

Why follow your studies with observed teaching practice?

There is no substitute for teaching practice. But it makes sense to do your teaching practice following a thorough introduction to the theory behind good TESOL practice.

If you want to be fully prepared and confident of your classroom management you would be well advised to consider the INTESOL Teaching Practice Certificate.

Online Teaching Practice

A low-cost, time effective format and accessible by anyone wherever they are in the world is the INTESOL online TP. All you need is a computer and Skype. You will be given lessons to prepare. Your lesson plans and materials will be emailed to the Director of Studies in the school whose students you will be teaching.

You will be asked to suggest dates, and lessons will be arranged at times mutually convenient for you and the school. You will be able to decide whether to do your lessons on the same or different days. You will also have the option of planning and delivering just one group initially so that you can draw on the experience to plan the following group. You will be expected to plan 6 lessons of 40 minutes each, 3 at elementary level and 3 at a different level. You will be sent details of the lessons you must plan.

Here is an example of a lesson you may be asked to prepare and teach:

  • Level: Elementary
  • Topic: Where I live
  • Target Structures: There is/are; prepositions of place; quantifiers- some, any, a few, a lot
  • Vocabulary: Relevant adjectives to describe a town/city; places/buildings in a town/city
At the beginning of the TP, the tutor will have a quick word with you and after you have been introduced to the students the tutor will remain off screen.
All your lesson materials will be printed out ready for the lessons; you will be able to ask the tutor to assist by handing out materials, showing flashcards etc.
At the end of the TP you will be asked to reflect on the practice and for oral feedback. Full oral feedback will then be given by the Director of Studies or tutor.

The Online Teaching Practice is a totally flexible, convenient method of completing your training.

Onsite Teaching Practice

INTESOL and The Association of British Language Schools (ABLS) have formed a partnership in order to provide students with the facility to complete a teaching practice at a fully accredited centre.

INTESOL is the first TESOL/TEFL training provider to offer its Online Cert TESOL trainees the option to take a full week of observed teaching practice. We have subsequently been able to develop a practice that will significantly enhance your skills and confidence not only in the classroom, but also during job interviews.

All INTESOL Teaching Practice Centres are accredited by the Association of British Language Schools. As the only TESOL training provider authorised to offer teaching practice programmes with ABLS accredited English language schools, INTESOL offers you the unique opportunity to gain valuable observed and assessed teaching practice within a quality, controlled environment.
ABLS schools are recognised by the UK authorities in exactly the same way as schools connected to the British Council. ABLS requires prospective schools to pass an initial inspection, covering legal requirements, premises, management, academic standards, teaching and learning, resources, student welfare and social programme. However, the world of English language teaching is very dynamic and ABLS believes that up to date accreditation requires further inspection every two years.

Make sure if you are registering for a Teaching Practice or Teaching Internship that it is taken in an accredited language school. The only accrediting bodies for private language schools within the UK are ABLS and the British Council. If the school is not accredited by one of these two accrediting bodies, it is an unaccredited school.

Following the INTESOL Online Certificate in TESOL or TESOL PLUS you are invited to attend one of our centres for a full week of teaching practice. Trainees, who have been taught how to manage classes and set up one to one teaching sessions; have been given a sound introduction to materials and visual aids production and have gained confidence in planning lessons, are given the opportunity to observe experienced teachers and to produce a portfolio of lesson plans and observation assessments. Our trainees are then observed teaching several levels, both in groups and on a one to one basis, and are awarded a graded Teaching Practice Certificate.

During your teaching practice you will:

•  have a personal mentor to guide you throughout your practice.
•  observe experienced, qualified teachers in a real language school.
•  produce a portfolio of lesson plans.
•  receive detailed feedback and observation assessments.
•  gain experience teaching real ESOL students of several levels, from beginners to advanced. The students you will be teaching travel to the UK from a variety of locations throughout Europe, the Far East and the Middle East.
•  be observed teaching both groups and on a one-to-one basis.
•  gain significant confidence in the classroom.
•  be awarded a graded Teaching Practice Certificate upon successful completion.

For 8 hours per day, Monday to Friday you will be involved in observation, lesson preparation and teaching. By the end of the practice you will have completed at least 6 hours of observed and assessed teaching practice which satisfies the British Council requirement.

Teaching Internship

As a quality TEFL/TESOL Course Provider we understand the importance of Teaching Practice. We also understand the importance to both you, as a teacher, and to potential employers, of a graded Teaching Practice Certificate which proves your ability within the classroom.

We provide a Teaching Practice at several centres throughout the UK plus one in Peru, one in Costa Rica, one in Spain, and one in South Africa as detailed above.

However we realise that not all of our trainees can afford the time or money to get to these centres. We do not want any of our trainees to be disadvantaged so we have developed the Teaching Internships. The teaching internship is suitable for INTESOL trainees who are already employed in a school where EFL/ESOL is on the curriculum or for those who have not yet started on this career path. Those who are not already teaching will be allowed to find a language school, local to them, willing to take part in this programme.

The INTESOL Teaching Internship fee is £220 or £200 if booked at the same time as booking the Online Certificate in TESOL or Certificate in TESOL PLUS. A deposit of £120 (£100 if booked together with Cert TESOL or Cert TESOL PLUS) is payable to INTESOL Worldwide, the balance to be paid to the teaching practice school.

If you are already employed in a school you will need to give us the name of the contact person for your assessments so that we can explain the teaching internship forms and the process.

If you are not already employed as a teacher you do not need to inform us of your chosen school until you are nearing completion of the online course. We will then ask for contact details so that we can explain the forms and the process.

Your chosen school for your teaching internship must have a qualified, experienced TEFL/ESOL teacher on the staff who is willing and allowed (by the school) to assess your teaching.

The Teaching Internship can take place at times to suit yourself and to suit the school. It may be part-time or full-time, it is a very flexible way to take a practice. Whatever shape your practice takes you will need to observe lessons for at least 10-15 teaching hours; assist a trained teacher for at least 10-15 hours; prepare lessons and teach at least 10 hours. 6 hours of this time will be graded and assessed and will help to determine the grade which will be recorded on your Teaching Practice Certificate.

Before your practice begins INTESOL will email you observation forms and lesson plan templates which you will need to return by email to INTESOL at the end of the practice.
