Additional Diploma in Teaching English (ESOL) in the Lifelong Learning Sector

ODLQC

INTESOL is accredited by a National Awarding Body to provide you with the QCA Approved Level 5 Additional Diploma in Teaching English (ESOL) in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

QCA Accreditation Number 500/3453/4

Introduction

The Additional Diploma in Teaching English (ESOL) in the LLS is designed for teachers or potential teachers who wish to specialise in the teaching of English (ESOL). It has been designed primarily (but not exclusively) for partly qualified teachers or teachers who already hold a recognised teaching qualification, but one which is not contextualised to the teaching of ESOL.
This diploma explores language development, acquisition and use, the barriers to language acquisition and development and the theories and principles of ESOL learning. It then focuses on the learning and teaching of ESOL through the planning, selection and development of approaches to language and ESOL learning for a range of learner types.

Teaching Practice is a requirement of this qualification.

Aims

The aim of this diploma is to provide teachers, trainers and tutors with the knowledge, understanding and skills in order to effectively teach adult ESOL in a specialist role within a Lifelong Learning Institution.

Objectives

  • To provide a sound subject knowledge base for teaching adult ESOL learners in a range of Lifelong Learning Institutions
  • To develop the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes for teaching adult ESOL learners
  • To promote personal and professional development
  • To enhance the quality of teaching and learning

Target Goup

This diploma is suitable for the following candidates:
  • Teachers in the workforce who hold a recognised generic teaching qualification (either partly or fully qualified) but have no recognised subject qualification in ESOL
  • Teachers in the workforce who hold a recognised subject specific teaching qualification who wish to teach an additional Skills for Life subject
  • Potential new teachers to the profession, who are unable to find an initial subject specific route available, who will work towards this qualification alongside the generic diploma qualification

Type of Institution

The learning institution may be an FE College, Adult and Community Learning Centre or a Training Centre delivering work based training such as voluntary, community, private and public organisations.

Entry Requirements

As part of the selection process for entry onto this course all potential entrants will be assessed against the LLUK criteria which cover process and personal skills in English. Exemption from this assessment is available to those holding the following qualifications:
  • BA or B.Ed. or higher degree in English Language
  • BA or B.Ed. or higher degree in Communication (in the medium of English)
  • A level 7 Diploma in English Teaching to Adults
No qualification other than those listed above allows exemption from an entry assessment. The accrediting body supports the accreditation of prior learning achievement. The candidate will need to produce evidence of an appropriate match between their prior achievement against the elements of the English process and personal skills. Additionally, candidates are selected for suitability to the course having established that they meet the following minimum criteria:
  • Are capable of meeting the new LLUK professional standards for the learning and skills sector by the end of their course
  • Do not have a criminal background which might prevent them from working as a teacher with young people or vulnerable adults

Teaching Practice

A minimum of 75 hours of teaching practice is required for this diploma, it is therefore necessary to ensure that candidates have access to this amount of teaching practice within the ESOL specialist area and that they will have the opportunity to deliver at least two levels of the ESOL curriculum.

Delivery and Contact Hours

This diploma has a credit value of 45 ie 450 hours of learning in total. The delivery method is as flexible as possible in order to allow those already teaching to continue their work with as little disruption as possible. This includes a combination of distance/online/web-based/directed and self-directed learning plus onsite observed teaching practice and feedback.

Fees

The full fees for this diploma are £2,500. This can be paid in 10 instalments of £250 each. A payment schedule will be issued with the first course package.
A discount of £100 is available for payment in full on application.
